Selena Quintanilla Perez (Spanish pronunciation: [se'lena kinta'nija 'peres] (April 16, 1971 - - March 31, 1995) popularly referred to as Selena, was an American Tejano singer. Her name is"the "Queen of Tejano music", her contributions to music and fashion have made her one of the most well-known Mexican-American entertainers in the latter half of the 20th century. In the year 2020, Billboard magazine put her in third place on their list of "Greatest Latino artists of All Time", based on both Latin albums as well as the Latin songs chart. With regards to her style of dress media outlets have dubbed her the Tejano Madonna. She is also among the most famous Latin music artists ever and has been credited with bringing the Tejano genre into the mainstream market.The youngest member of the Quintanilla family, she made her debut on the scene of music as a member of the band Selena y Los Dinos, with her two elder siblings A.B. Quintanilla Quintanilla. In the 1980s, she was often criticized for singing Tejano music that was a genre of music that was predominantly male. The singer was also denied bookings in Texas venues. After receiving the Tejano Music Award in 1987 for Female Vocalist, she gained notoriety. In 1989 she signed with EMI Latin and released her debut album, Entre a Mi Mundo (1992). Her brother was her main music producer and music producer. Entre a Mi Mundo was a top-ranked album in the US Billboard Regional Mexican Albums charts for eight consecutive weeks. The critics of the music called it"the "breakthrough recording" of her musical career because of its commercial record-breaking success. "Como la Flor", one of its singles, became her most adored signature song. Live! (1993) was awarded Best Mexican/American album at the 1994 Grammy Awards, becoming the first recording by a female Tejano artist to win this award. In 1994 she came out with Amor Prohibido, which became one of the most successful Latin albums sold in the United States. In the eyes of critics, it was responsible with initiating Tejano music's first commercial phase. It was one of Latin music's most well-known subgenres.
